No one wants to get their root canal removed and the older that we get the worse it can be and the longer the recovery time. A root canal can be done by a dentist or an endodontist. Usually the root canal is spotted by a general practice dentist. He or she then performs the procedure or refers the patient to a endodontist.
If your dentist performs the procedure then local anesthesia to numb the area near the tooth will be used. Next a rubber dam is placed around the tooth. An access hole will then be drilled into the tooth. The pulp along with bacteria, the decayed nerve tissue and related debris is removed. The cleaning out process is accomplished using root canal files. A series of these files of increasing diameter are each subsequently placed into the access hole and worked down the full length of the tooth to scrape and scrub the sides of the root canals. Then the tooth is cleaned and sealed.
If an endodontist performs the procedure they can elect to put you asleep and wake you up when everything is done. When I had my root canal, I was put to sleep and it was nice. I tend to get stressed out being at the dentist’s office so I always anticipate pain even though no pain occurs but just the anticipation cause a stressful at the dental office.
